My Mental Toughness > My Physical Toughness

Sunday, July 25, 2010

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Crystal Light Pure Fitness.

When it comes to labels, I would not consider myself athletic.  Or sporty.  If I were a Spice Girl, I'd probably be Goofy Spice or Odd Spice.  That being said, I do work out five to six times a week and play an intensely physical sport in roller derby.  I enjoy exercise and have my whole life been a decent skater, but overall don't see me fitting in with great athletes or super sporty people. I don't think I give myself enough credit.  Sure, I was a bookworm growing up, but I also loved playing outside and climbing trees and kickball.  I played both soccer and tennis, and though I may not have been on varsity, I did start and play almost every gave in soccer and once won second place in a tennis tournament.  (Um, okay, so there were only three people in the tournament.)  For me, I've found that having the confidence in my ability really strengthens my ability and allows me to excel.

The hardest physical challenge I ever had (besides giving birth) was backpacking in Colorado in the summer of 2000, and it's a great example of how the mental feeds the physical.  I was working in Texas at a church and we took a small group of guys and girls from zero feet above sea level to something like 2000 feet above sea level to backpack in the mountains for five straight days.  The altitude sickness alone had people puking and panting and crying after an hour of hiking. As a leader, I felt the pressure to really stay positive and keep going, despite my own exhaustion.
The beauty makes it look easy in pictures.

I still remember that first day:  an ill-planned 9-hour hike to our first campsite.  Our guides must have really overestimated our stamina.  By the end, people were stumbling and had passed their heavy packs onto our guides, who were trying to balance their own packs as well.  We stopped to make camp and basically everyone crumpled to the ground.  Ten minutes later, our guides informed us that we really needed to move our campsite to a space about two football fields away. After a nine-hour uphill hiked with 40 pounds on your back, two football fields is an immense distance.  Especially after you've put your pack down and allowed yourself to rest.  The idea of putting it back on to walk even two-hundred yards is insane.  The guides felt bad and offered to make several trips themselves over the small hill, carrying other people's packs for them so they could just walk.  The offer was SO tempting, let me tell you.  I wanted to weep when I strapped my bag back on.  But I did it.  I put on my pack again, forced myself to stand, and put one foot in front of the other to get over that last hill of the day. The week did get a little easier, but most days I spent telling myself:  "Just one foot in front of the other.  Just one foot in front of the other.  Keep moving."

I felt incredibly proud of myself and our team of teenage girls for making it to the end.  Not that there was really a choice--once we started out, the only way to finish was to FINISH.  We didn't have the luxury of pillows, personal hygiene, or food choice.  No Crystal Light or sodas or coffee--only water from nearby streams mixed with a tiny bit of bleach.  (Yes, bleach.) At the end of the week, the camp was so impressed with my ability that they asked me to stay on and be a guide for the summer.  As much as the idea of repeating that same intense struggle, going without deodorant or bathing, and living out of a backpack for two months appealed to me, I kept my job at the church.

This is the last post for the month sponsored by Crystal Light Pure Fitness, which means the last chance for you to comment and win $100.  I hope you've also been taking advantage of reading other blogger's posts for more chances to win--visit the roundup page here to read and comment.  For rules and restrictions, click here. As we close, what is your proudest fitness accomplishment?  Leave a comment for another entry to win $100 from Blogher and Crystal Light.

We Done Got Punked

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Rob and I had a hot date last night to a dinner hosted by My Blog Spark, a group of bloggers that get to try and review products. I actually hadn't reviewed anything yet, so was surprised to get the invitation for a free meal and gift card just for being a part of it. I will, as you know, do about anything for a free meal. Rob and I assumed there would be some kind of presentation or something they were selling, but we didn't care. As I said: free meal.

We kept waiting for the trick, but there was no presentation, no forced and awkward conversation--just Rob and I at a table with a great four-course meal and a gift card in my purse.  Still, we thought there HAD to be something to this free dinner thing.  And what was with that guy who was videotaping everything? We were just finishing up our main course when the waiter dropped off the fortune cookies.  Rob opened his first and chuckled, then began to read aloud.  It went something like this:  Surprise!  The meal you just ate was actually a frozen entree from Wanchai Ferrry!

We knew there was a trick!  That just wasn't the one we were expecting.  Not.  At. All.  Especially given that my meal, Spicy Garlic Chicken, was fabulous and even passed the Rob test.  (He has very high standards for Chinese, especially when it comes to the dishes with fried chicken pieces and sauce.  He's a snob in that way.)  The chicken was great, the veggies were fresh, the sauce was spicy and sweet and wonderful.  A frozen meal, really?  Good thing I've got coupons!!

Overall, we had a great date and a funny night with the whole surprise aspect.  The good news is that not only did we find a great new product from the grocery store, but we found a restaurant we really liked.  Shanghai River provided the drinks, soups, appetizers and deserts--only the entree was from Wanchai Ferry.  Rob and I both about died over the beef skewers, which come with their own little fire pit you can heat the steak on at your table.  I like fire.  I like beef.  What's not to like about beef skewers?

So, thanks to My Blog Spark for a great deal and a great punk!  I will definitely be checking my freezer section for Wanchai Ferry AND heading back to Shanghai River to skewer me some beef.

Pour Some (Natural) Sugar on Me

Sunday, July 18, 2010

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Crystal Light Pure Fitness.

Summer is a great time to lighten up.  From switching T's to tanks and simplifying daily schedules, I'm all about toning it down and cooling it down.  The cooling down part is the best:  frozen drinks, ice cream, popsicles (Saw's favorite), limeades.  Okay, so I'm a little food-obsessed.

While I do love a ton of sugary things, one of the best and sweetest treats for summer is totally stripped down:   fruits.  Being a bargain hunter, this means that I can get great pirces on things like blackberries, blueberries, pineapples, raspberries, strawberries--YUM!  Fresh veggies are great too, but in the heat, cool fruit is super refreshing.  It's also wonderful to know that I'm not consuming extraneous "stuff."  Saw loves it too, and I'm always happy to have my kid eating real fruit v. fruit snacks.

As far as drinks go, I'm a little diet-soda addicted, mostly because I like something cool and sweet-tasting without getting all my calories from a drink. If we're talking about stripping it down, drinking something light and low-calorie but made with actual growing things trumps chemically-created confections.  Crystal Light Pure Fitness gets its low-calorie sweetness from an all-natural sweetener.

Remember that I am doing a $100 giveaway sponsored by Crystal Light and Blogher, so every comment you leave on my Crystal Light posts is an entry.  (Click here for the official rules.) For this week's entry, what are your favorite sweet treats of summer?

Please visit the roundup page so that you can read what more bloggers are saying and enter for more moneys!

There Is and "I" in Team, and It's ME

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Crystal Light Pure Fitness.

There are three main reasons that I want to get back in shape post-baby. Two of them are probably the most common for anyone wanting to be in shape:

1. to be healthy and fit
2. to achieve maximum hotness

Okay, so you might word that second one a little differently. The reality is that most people love the way they look better when they are in their best shape. Being healthy is a fabulous goal, but fitting into my old jeans and being able to feel somewhat decent in a bathing suit are important to me too.

This month I'm getting back to my focus on pre-baby shape now that most of my traveling and crazy times have ended. This means hitting the gym five to six times a week, eating well, replacing any sugary drinks with water and low-cal alternatives like Crystal Light Pure Fitness, and--my favorite--DERBY. My third goal (which is definitely not a mainstream one) is to kill it next season skating with Houston Roller Derby.  Right now I'm heavier than I normally am, and this slows me down.  Since I typically skate the position of the jammer who scores points for my team, being slower means that I am a weaker jammer.  Being a weaker jammer means that I'm not helping out my team the way I need to be, and the last thing I want is to be slowing down my whole team because I'm not in the shape I need to be.  For sure I want to be healthy and get back in my pre-pregnancy pants, but what really motivates me is knowing I have a team of people I don't want to let down.

Whether that's a trainer by your side in the gym, a good friend, a sports figure you look up to, or in my case, a whole team of amazing people skating beside you, that encouragement can be the extra boost to meet that fitness goal.  You can see the fire in my eyes here that comes from skating alongside my teammates.  (I swear it's fire and not just red-eye from my cheap camera.)  I am not pushing myself to be my best for me--I am pushing myself to be my best for US.

For another chance to win that $100, who inspires you to be fit?  Leave a comment here, and then visit the roundup of fellow bloggers for more chances to win cash.  If you want to peek at the rules, click here.

Hands in, everybody, for working together to achieve fitness goals!

Rules, and Other "Things"

So I wanted to go ahead and put a few rules down for my giveaways on this blog, since I hadn't. I'll probably make this a permanent page as well for down the road. Here are some ground rules and other logistical things.

-The drawings are random! I do not pick friends, and I do not pick strangers. It is RANDOM.

-Please read how you can enter. Sometimes it's just a comment, and sometimes you'll have chances to win by posting via facebook, twitter and blog. You'll need to email me a link or post in comments so I can see your posts. If you don't tell me, I won't know.

-Check back to see if you won! This sounds simple, but often I don't hear back and have companies waiting for addresses and such to send prizes. You can subscribe or follow or just check back. The best thing really would be to LEAVE A FORM OF CONTACT IN YOUR COMMENT so I can contact you.

-If you won and I don't have contact info for you and don't hear back in seven days, I will be forced to do another drawing. Not because I'm impatient, but often because I have people waiting on me and need to be efficient.

Thanks! And get ready for another great giveaway...

The Trick to Fitness Is the Trick

Monday, July 5, 2010

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Crystal Light Pure Fitness.

It’s summer in Houston—let’s all get outdoors and exercise!! Don’t all of you get up at once.

If you happen to live in a city that’s hot in the summer, like oh, say, HOUSTON, then you’re nodding when I say that you may have to use tricks in the summer to stay active. While winter has that lovely hibernation quality, slowing you down into a funk of sweat pants and warm beverages and television, summer can lull you into the same spot on the couch with a tank top and a frozen drink and trashy summer TV.

As much as I do love being outdoors, to stay active in the summer, the trick is staying INSIDE. Usually this is not my house, because I tend to let dust collect on all my good-intentioned workout DVDs. My gym is five minutes away and has childcare (not yet for Lincoln, sadly), so that’s my number one go-to. If I plan just right, I can also catch up on my trashy TV like E! News. Though I’m sweating, I don’t feel like I’m breathing wet carpet, which is how it feels outside, and I am refreshed instead of like dying at the end of an hour or so.

But if I had my choice, though, I’d just do derby every day. While I'm benched due to C-section, I only skate like once or maybe twice a week, but it's time I cherish. I am pushing myself HARD right alongside other fun and diverse women. It's a workout and a social event and a little breather from being a mommy. Did I mention that we skate inside? Sawyer also gets inspired by my safety-conscious helmet-wearing.

The thing to keep in mind whenever you're working out especially in the summer is hydration. I'm honestly not sure how I did not shrivel up and die for the first 30 years of my life because I did not drink water. Period. energy drinks, sodas, diet drinks, coffee--but no water. I hated it. Please don't ask me why, since water has no taste.

Until I got pregnant with Sawyer and my midwife required it, I did NOT drink water. Then I discovered that water, too, needs a trick. In my case, that's ice. And lots of it. Now I would say that I drink something like 64 ounces a day of icy water and feel parched if I fall short of that.

Crystal Light is another great trick to get people drinking water. Studies have found that people who drink Crystal Light drink 20% more water. How about that! Even if you don't need tricks, Crystal Light Pure Fitness is fabulous for replenishing electrolytes and keeping you hydrated without tons of calories or artificial junk. Great for athletes or even just for normal people trying not to dry up in the summer heat.

What tricks do you use to stay fit or keep hydrated during the summer?? Leave a comment on this or any of the three more weekly posts sponsored by Crystal Light this month for a chance to win $100. (If you don't do math, that's FOUR total chances to win on my blog.)

You can also check out other blogger’s Crystal Light posts for more chances to win, plus a chance to win $1,000!

Potty Product Review: The Little Looster

Saturday, June 26, 2010

When Sawyer got interested in all things potty a few months ago, I thought we'd never potty train him because he was afraid of the toilet.  He hated the little potty, and is so small that the big toilet was really difficult for him to navigate.  So even though he was interested and could tell us before he was going to go, he had absolutely no interest in going ON the toilet.  Last week was his first time to go on the toilet, and it was great!  But still kind of hard for him to manage without falling in.  Until now.

Last week, I received a really cool potty product called The Little Looster for review.  You can see it here at the base of the toilet in our lovely staged photo.  Basically, it's a sturdy plastic stool, shaped to fit around the toilet and provide three-sided stability for the little ones.  It's PERFECT.

Since that first wobbly success, we've had a number of poops and pees on the toilet, all aided by the Little Looster.  It cleans off really well, being plastic, and in our potty adventures, we've definitely had to clean it off, if you get my drift.  I can also see it transitioning to a great boost for tooth brushing at the sink.  So if you are needing some help in potty training and helping your little ones feel confident on the big toilet, definitely give this product a try!

Snikkidy Snacks Giveaway!

Friday, June 25, 2010

This week, Snikiddy Snacks sent me a sample of their gluten-free Baked Fries to sample and I have three more samples to give away, so leave a comment at the bottom of this post to enter!  (You can also do multiple posts to let me know if you posted a link to my blog on facebook, twitter, or your blog.)  Here you can see Saw enjoying them, and I tried them as well.  We are lucky enough to not have allergies (that we know about yet) at our home, but I do have friends who can't have gluten.  I actually forgot that these were gluten-free until after we'd polished off the bag.  I was really surprised, because they basically reminded me of any other great cheese snack.  (This week, with my Dad here, I will admit we got into cheese balls.)  Definitely a more healthy alternative to some of those more processed, cheesy chips, the Snikiddy Snacks Baked Fries were a hit at our house!  Leave comments to win your free sample.  I'll draw for a winner on Tuesday, so leave your comments by 11:59pm on Monday! *****Make that 11:59pm TUESDAY!  WINNER ANNOUNCED WEDNESDAY.

Calphalon Giveaway!

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

It's been too long since the last giveaway! I am super excited to announce that I have a set of Calphalon omelet pans (10 and 12 inch) for a lucky reader. This prize is from CSN stores, a company with over 200 online stores selling everything from cribs to food items to tv stands. They have great prices and great deals! Here is a link if you'd like to see the Calphalon pans up for grabs.

Giveaway Rules
-Contest will run until Friday, April 2 at 11:59pm, and the winner will be announce next Monday morning, April 5.
-To enter, simply leave a comment on this post. If you're seeing this on Facebook through Notes, you must actually come to my blog address, www.hatepickleslovethis.blogspot.com, and comment on this post.
-For an additional entry, send a friend to my blog. If they mention you in the comments on this post, in addition to entering themselves, you will get a bonus chance to win. So if you leave a comment and send five friends who each comment that you sent them, you'll get six entries.
-After the winner is announced, I'll need that person to shoot me an email with a physical address. You probably don't want to post your email or address online.

Good luck! I can tell you that having Calphalon pans in the kitchen is a treat! I am still using the ones I got 7 years ago for my wedding and love them.
