The Trick to Fitness Is the Trick

Monday, July 5, 2010

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Crystal Light Pure Fitness.

It’s summer in Houston—let’s all get outdoors and exercise!! Don’t all of you get up at once.

If you happen to live in a city that’s hot in the summer, like oh, say, HOUSTON, then you’re nodding when I say that you may have to use tricks in the summer to stay active. While winter has that lovely hibernation quality, slowing you down into a funk of sweat pants and warm beverages and television, summer can lull you into the same spot on the couch with a tank top and a frozen drink and trashy summer TV.

As much as I do love being outdoors, to stay active in the summer, the trick is staying INSIDE. Usually this is not my house, because I tend to let dust collect on all my good-intentioned workout DVDs. My gym is five minutes away and has childcare (not yet for Lincoln, sadly), so that’s my number one go-to. If I plan just right, I can also catch up on my trashy TV like E! News. Though I’m sweating, I don’t feel like I’m breathing wet carpet, which is how it feels outside, and I am refreshed instead of like dying at the end of an hour or so.

But if I had my choice, though, I’d just do derby every day. While I'm benched due to C-section, I only skate like once or maybe twice a week, but it's time I cherish. I am pushing myself HARD right alongside other fun and diverse women. It's a workout and a social event and a little breather from being a mommy. Did I mention that we skate inside? Sawyer also gets inspired by my safety-conscious helmet-wearing.

The thing to keep in mind whenever you're working out especially in the summer is hydration. I'm honestly not sure how I did not shrivel up and die for the first 30 years of my life because I did not drink water. Period. energy drinks, sodas, diet drinks, coffee--but no water. I hated it. Please don't ask me why, since water has no taste.

Until I got pregnant with Sawyer and my midwife required it, I did NOT drink water. Then I discovered that water, too, needs a trick. In my case, that's ice. And lots of it. Now I would say that I drink something like 64 ounces a day of icy water and feel parched if I fall short of that.

Crystal Light is another great trick to get people drinking water. Studies have found that people who drink Crystal Light drink 20% more water. How about that! Even if you don't need tricks, Crystal Light Pure Fitness is fabulous for replenishing electrolytes and keeping you hydrated without tons of calories or artificial junk. Great for athletes or even just for normal people trying not to dry up in the summer heat.

What tricks do you use to stay fit or keep hydrated during the summer?? Leave a comment on this or any of the three more weekly posts sponsored by Crystal Light this month for a chance to win $100. (If you don't do math, that's FOUR total chances to win on my blog.)

I too live in the south and it's totally miserable in the summer. I do all of my workouts in the gym from end of May to end of September! It's even too hot in the wee hours of the morning to go outside!!

I would say to stay fit (and I use that term loosely), I look for sneaky ways to burn a few calories, even it is just parking farther away, taking the stairs, running around the house with my kids, or doing a workout dvd for ten minutes! Every calorie counts! Oh and I found that fitness water at the 99cent store, we love it!

I'm lucky enough to have a bike in my basement, so working out at home is easy, but my fav thing to do is run around with my kids. What's better then that fun and kid time :)

I do all my working out in a nice air conditioned gym all summer while the kiddos get to play with other kids and I get mommy time. We also do some bike riding early in the morning or late evening when we can get out during those times. Or my favorite swimming but that doesn't happen often because generally I swim with the kiddos and I can't swim laps and hold a 14 month old at the same time.
As far as water I try to keep my bottle (Klean Kanteens - I have a slight obsession with them!) filled up and ice cold near me.

i am actually crazy and do bikram yoga in 104 degree heat, but nothing burns as many calories or makes me feel quite as good. i have at least 5 boxes of crystal lite packages in my house at a time, i just love them. its the ONLY way i will drink water, which for some reason i find to be disgusting. :)

Ha! I wish I had the time to work out!! Lol!! But we love to swim in our house.. so any chance we get to swim, we go! Unfortunately if you live in Houston, you'll know it's been raining for like a week straight and its forecast to rain for this whole week as well!! Boo!!!

I too live in the sticky, hot south and I do most of my fitness in the air conditioned house or at the pool with my kiddos!!

Despite the sweltering Texas heat and brutal Houston humidity, Ultimate Frisbee is my favorite way to get a work out in my day! I guess that just comes from being an Aggie :) But with this sport, it's more about the bonding than anything else!

I take a refillable water bottle with me just about everywhere during the summer, even if I'm just running to the store. I hate how feeling parched can make me lightheaded on really hot days, and since I don't drink soft drinks and rarely have juice, if I don't have water handy, I always wind up spending money on McDonald's sweet tea ($1!) or -- worse -- a bottle of crazy expensive Aquafina or the like at the register.

BRING ON THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY. seriously, i could spend my whole life outside in the sweltering southern summer. the only thing i can't do is run in the heat - i do that in the lovely air conditioned gym above the laundry room.

but i agree - what is it about a tasteless beverage that is so horrible? i hate plain water.

Does chasing a 2-year old around and carrying a heavy preggo belly count as staying fit? Ok, so we also like to dance to the radio for about an hour a day, walk and swim :)

As for water. I have pretty much always had 8+ glasses each day, but adding something like Crystal Light sounds like fun :)

Karina July 7, 2010 at 9:17 AM

Gatorade helps me stay hydrated because it tastes so yummy. Crystal light will help me to drink more water, since it won't be so bland

Just call me "B" July 7, 2010 at 4:26 PM

I keep a glass of ice water on the counter at all times! When I walk by, I take a sip! Much easier to do if it's fixed and waiting for me!

My way of staying hydrated is to always have my plastic mug from the hospital filled. It holds 20oz and I refill it multiple times a day with cold, cold water. Also, sometimes sugar free flavored drinks to give a little flavor for the day.

I stay cool by winning MONEY!!! a $100 is a good way to start. Then I spend it at the mall :)

Our newest drink is fresh squeezed orange juice from the grocery store. You can watch them make it and it's cheap, for orange juice.

I have a litter bottle that I fill with water and freeze it at night so that it's pleasant to drink it throughout the day in the heat :)

A lot of times I'll fill up my water thermos and just make sure I get it all down in a day. That's my tip to hydration, yo.

I carry bottles of frozen water or Gatorade whenever I go anywhere to make sure I stay hydrated. While at home, I fill a 20-oz glass beer mug with ice water and a straw that I can sip from throughout the day. To help get extra exercise, I run upstairs to my bedroom every time I have to use the bathroom. This keeps the powder room "company ready" and adds a few extra steps in my day.

During the summer we make homemade lemonade and orange juice to stay hydrated!

My husband fills a nalgene bottle each morning and drinks two of those a day to stay hydrated in the un-airconditioned schools of the philadelphia school district!

I make a ton of smoothies, homemade vegetable juice and crystal light to stay hydrated.

Mami2jcn July 19, 2010 at 7:04 AM

I carry a bottle around with me wherever I go and refill it with water throughout the day.

I always have my water bottle with me so to remind to get and drink water!

Sarah Rothell July 26, 2010 at 7:10 PM

I keep a nalgene bottle handy and try to drink 2-4 a day:)

Deb Anderson July 28, 2010 at 3:54 PM

water, water, everywhere! I put full water bottles in the freezer overnight so that all I have to do is grab one the next day for my bicycle ride and it thaws slowly to keep me hydrated with cool water.

Anonymous,  July 29, 2010 at 12:35 PM

Luckily, I love drinking water. I'm part of the water club at work and am constantly refilling my water bottle. I just don't feel well if I don't drink enough water and I can feel when i need more hydration.

Phyllis July 30, 2010 at 7:38 PM

As long as I carry my water bottle with me, I can continue to take my fitness walks even in the hot summer months.

Unknown July 31, 2010 at 1:13 AM

I drink a lot of water and juice to stay hydrated this summer

I stay fit by walking. I try to do 3 miles at least 5 times a week. It is an easy exercise that our whole family can do together.
